Check out Jean-Jacques in Pleasantville. http://www.jean-jacques.com/venues.aspx They cater at a large variety of venues and may be able to help you find what you're looking for. The problem with that large a crowd at a place that isn't generally used for weddings is that you have to create everything yourself. Call Craig Purdy at Umami in Croton. He often caters functions at unusual places and could have some ideas for you. http://www.umamicafe.com/ Someone in another thread (Motosport?) mentioned his son was married at Lyndhurt in Tarrytown. Do keep in mind that you'll be at the mercy of weather at state parks, barns, etc. There's a reason people often end up at more traditional venues. For an affordable place that does host weddings often, check out Stewart Manor Country Club (which is neither a manor nor a country club) http://www.stewartmanor.com/home.html

Well, since you asked, St. George was amazing! We got there and were pleasantly surprised to find that the Steak Frites did not have a surcharge (the menu they'd emailed me had a $12 surcharge, presumably for a better quality steak. they had hanger steak when we were there). My wife and I split the chicken liver mousse (it had a cryptic French name but I had looked it up when I saw the menu) and an onion soup with a duck base. Both were excellent; the onions in the soup were incredibly sweet and there wasn't much cheese like a normal French Onion soup, but it was still great. My wife loved her Steak Frites, and the fries while not as thin as you'd normally expect, were crispy and great. I had the duck confit. It was quarter duck and was very crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. It came with lentils which were watery, but I give them a pass on that since the dish was supposed to come with bacon and I ordered it without and I would have to believe that the bacon would have made a major difference in them. For dessert, we both got the profiteroles after seeing the people at the table next to us get them (plus I'd seen photos online). They were just amazing. The chocolate on top was ganache and they were probably the best profiteroles I've ever had. I wish they'd had a dessert like apple tart tatin that would have traveled well so we could have gotten it to go and split an order of profiteroles, but I can't say it was a burden to eat 2 of them each. They had a surprisingly large menu, and even had specials, most of which were available on the RW menu (except for the $20 foie gras). Bottom line, one of our best RW meals and I'd definitely go back. Oh, and the tables were really crammed in together. We declined one table which was really squeezed in and got one that wasn't quite as bad, but a server still had to lean over my wife to serve the people in the corner. On the other hand, we had a very nice conversation with the guys sitting next to us. Co-owner Jason is a really nice guy, too.

About a year ago, we walked into the Southold location, having never been and hearing great reviews. It smelled funky inside, we sat down , and as the smell was off putting and decor old and worn, we left after 5 minutes.

I think the gist of it for all of us is to post regularly about our Chowhounding. Any Chowhound finds are relevant. Be it a taco in Huntington or a noodle shop in Westbury. The activity needs to be a lot higher and I, for one, love to read about the passion one may have for the fried calamari at Steve's Piccola Bussola in Westbury, if only for the frying pan full of garlicky marinara, or the crunchy crust at Pizzeli's in North Bellmore. Keep us posted regularly about what you find. Happy Chowhounding! http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/970209#8840714

Gone back a few more times. They have cloth napkins and a few desserts now :) Bar stools are more comfortable than the blue, wood chairs. Lake views are still amazing. Tried the fried calamari. Very good. Not too heavily breaded or overcooked. A few thinly sliced lemons were fried with the calamari. One time my pizza crust was thin and another time medium. Otherwise, pretty consistent on the food front so far. Can they clone Janet? She is everything a server should be.

Yippee! 'Q in Suffern! I sometimes go to the Lafayette Theatre on Saturday Mornings for their classic film series, and this will make a great post-movie lunch spot. Sigh: every silver lining has its own special cloud; they supplanted another favorite spot, Ireland's 32. Oh well.

You can usually tell as soon as you walk in, and that doesn't cost anything! Check out White Cap someday when you're in the area, you won't be sorry.

Long Island Gyros

Thanks! I walked in to Sufiya with the family one afternoon. They were nice, the food good, gyro was not listed on the menu. My son asked the waiter who replied abruptly that they do not have gyro. I usually order a grilled meat skewer cooked to order rather than the sliced meat from the vertical spit. I feel that although the name has changed from Azerbaijan to Sufiya, the food is the same. Not bad. Gotta give it another try. Gyrolicious was up for sale for a few Years now. I guess someone is going to give it a whirl with this new name "Yevma". I looked at the website and the menu you supplied. I wish them much success. I hope they do very well. Gyrolicious was fine when they first opened in that spot, then, I don't know what happened. I will add that a sit down restaurant in a take out format isn't always a comfortable situation. Gyrolicious had this problem with customers ordering at the counter and asking for it to stay and then being told to sit anywhere and a waitperson would come by to have you repeat yourself. Or when you are seated immediately you don't see the offerings up front..etc... Thanks again for the update! Be well and keep Chowhounding! Edit: A closer look at the website shows they have pictures pulled from the internet and one, the stuffed calamari that's not even on their menu, is from one of the best Greek food blogs kalofagas.ca I'm sure there are copyright infringes in that move...

I left off Saratoga National and the more casual Harvest and Hearth (on Saratoga Lake), which are just outside of town. So many good restaurants . . .so hard to select just a few.

I haven't. Last I tried to go our dinner companions changed plans and we ended up at Aperitif in Rockville Centre. It's on my list... Anything Kevin Liebov doing worth mentioning? He couldn't save Nicholas James Bistro I guess? Has Chef Kevin been there a week yet? The Crease was a favorite watering hole of mine back in the day. As a side note for south shore dining, we do still miss Hal Goldman, RIP.

I've heard that about the sound level on Tuesday nights there. We've only been on Fridays and it's been fine.
